Radio Slovenija Stations Identity

Icon versions of new stations logos
Refreshed version, 2019 (not implemented)

The redesign of the corporate visual identity for Radio Slovenija’s stations represents my largest and most significant design project, marking the first successful systemic attempt to unify different radio stations within the public broadcaster RTV Slovenija. Prior to this project's realization in 2015, the radio programs had all been developed independently, each in its own distinct style and without any direct connection to the umbrella brand. The core objectives for the final solution grew out of a clear need for simplicity and freshness, a systemic harmonization of all radio stations into a recognizable "family," and strict alignment with the overarching identity of RTV Slovenija.

The foundation of the entire solution became the existing Dax font family, which serves as the crucial visual thread tying the entire broadcasting house together. Following an extensive first phase of research and exploring various concepts, the final approved proposal was built around a fixed logo structure that emphasizes maximum differentiation between the individual programs. The new logos feature a square colored box containing a specific pictogram or ideogram, while the name of each station is set independently in the Dax Black typeface. Through this thoughtful system, every station retained its own color identity and a certain degree of continuity with its previous look, while the entire network was revitalized as a visually synchronized and more manageable graphic system.

Because the project altered long-standing visual identities, introducing the new logos to editors and radio creators was not initially an easy sell. In 2015, some editorial teams found it difficult to say goodbye to their old, deeply rooted symbols. To address this natural skepticism and the fear of the unknown, Matej Praprotnik and I personally visited the offices of every single radio station. Through direct presentations, we thoroughly explained the reasoning behind the systemic overhaul and clearly demonstrated why the new, refined identity would mark a true step forward in their visibility across modern media environments.

This comprehensive approach to presentation and implementation proved to be highly successful. Although the project is now more than eleven years old, it is still exceptionally well-received among the stations and remains completely relevant, fresh, and timeless in its daily use. The enduring longevity of this identity confirms that the system was built on exceptionally solid theoretical and practical foundations from the very beginning, which also allows for much easier upgrades across the entire public institution in the future.

Special thanks go to Miha Lampreht, the Director of Radio Slovenia at the time, Mirko Štular, the Director of Val 202, and Jerneja Jevševar, producer at Radio Val 202.
