Experiments in Typography is a project that represents the practical component of a thesis. While the theoretical part explores the nature of typographic experimentation, expressive decorative typefaces, and their classification, the practical side consists of a series of posters demonstrating four innovative font concepts:
Modula Beta Family: The concept of three-dimensional layering is pushed further here into a visually charged, expressive poster. The composition features a self-portrait of the author, constructed entirely out of the font's core geometric modules.
Modula Alfa Family and Busstop Font: Both typefaces draw inspiration from the urban environment and public transit. Modula Alfa is inspired by the digital typography found on city bus displays (route numbers and destinations). Busstop is based on the distinct, elongated letterforms painted directly on asphalt to indicate bus lanes, stops, or school zones. Their characteristically stretched proportions allow for intentional distortion and scaling without losing their raw, street-level aesthetic.
Digitia Font: A dynamic and funky take on traditional pixel typography. Its defining feature is that the lowercase letters are rotated by 90 degrees, opening up entirely new compositional layouts and allowing text to be naturally stacked vertically from top to bottom.
Awards and Recognition: The project received high acclaim within the design community. The entire series of experimental posters was awarded the prestigious Brumen Award at the Biennial of Slovenian Visual Communications, winning the highest national honor in the student work category.
